Why is Indiana Jones afraid of snakes?

I know it states it in the third movie, but can anyone tell me why? Thanks!

Update:

By the way, I have never seen the third movie, so if you could explain more in depth that would be great.

At the very beginning of the 3rd movie (last crusade), there is that whole 10 minutes of stuff featuring River Phoenix as a young Indiana Jones. He falls into a huge pit of snakes during that chase scene on top of the circus train and it scarred him for life.

Raiders of the Lost Ark has 2 scenes that mention snakes. Once when he climbs into the seaplane and the pilots python is in his seat, and the scene in the desert when they are down in the excavation site getting the ark out, there are snakes everywhere. But it all started with the train scene flashback.

In "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" it shows Indie with a boyscout troop and he wasn't afraid of snakes then. But during the chase he jumped on a train carrying animals in a circus and he fell into a holding full of snakes. I think he's never been right since then.

When he was young (as played by River Phoenix), he fell into a train car full of snakes. It was part of a traveling circus. It was also, at this time in his life, that he got the scar on his chin due to mishandling a whip.

    Because he just is.

Like some people are afraid of spiders or whatever.

    Indy is scared of snakes.

    Simple as that.
