1st, the Mayans never said the world will end in 2012. Their calender just ends then. There is no answer as to why their calender stops in 2012 which brings out all the crazies who bring us stories of the end of the world and other make believe nonsense. There has never been anyone ever who knows when the Earth will come to an end except maybe scientists and their prediction is the Earth will be a planet with life whether humans are here or not for maybe another 2 billion years before changes in the aging Sun wipes away our atmosphere and life. Everyone else is lying with myths.
As to life in the universe well you are here so yes there is life in the universe and no, no, no, Earth is not the only planet with life in the galaxy let alone the whole universe.
On a dark clear night, if you look up, you can see about 7000 stars from Earth. What you can't see are the 200 billion other stars in our galaxy that are too far away to see. Besides the 200 billion stars in our galaxy, there are the 200 billion other galaxies in the universe, each galaxy being its own group of 10's of billion of stars, 100's of billion of stars and some galaxies have trillions of stars. Also contrary to what astronomers thought 15 years ago, today they are finding most stars have planetary systems. Planets are common.
Trust me, the universe is filled with life. Life is one of the things the universe does. The Earth was formed 4.5 billion years ago, 9 billion years after our galaxy was formed. There is life around stars that were formed billions of years before the Earth was even formed. Can you imagine an intelligent species that is millions or billions years older than your species?
As to being afraid of aliens remember this, in order for a so called intelligent species to leave their home planet, they must have long ago given up their animal instincs of hording and war. To leave a planet a species must spend more money on their survival than on the destruction of their species. Right now your species spends much more money on destructive things like war than you do on your survival and on what is best for the survival of your species.
Any aliens who may visit your planet have long lost your animal instinctive ways and are not out to destroy you. They are waiting to see if you are mature enough to join life in the universe or if you are really the violent ones and destroy yourselves before learning what is truly in the universe.
As far as life on Mars? Know one knows yet. If there is it could only be tiny life like bactaria. Nothing with any size could survive on Mars.
I'd be more worried about your species than any alien.
