You've got Balboa Park (where the San Diego Zoo and a lot of other attractions are located), Horton Plaza (huge amazing shopping mall), Qualcomm Arena (Chargers' games), Petco Park (Padres' games), the Gaslamp Quarter (restaurants, clubs, bars, shopping, etc.), Seaport Village (restaurants, shopping, etc.), Seaworld, the Convention Center, USS Midway Museum (near Seaport), Star of India, etc.
Downtown San Diego and San Diego in general have a lot of events and things to do :).

The Gaslamp Quarter is an exciting downtown area with lots of nightclubs, restaurants, shopping, and things to do. Learn more about San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter at http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/Gaslamp-Quarter....

I cosign everything the other poster said about SD (Gaslamp, Horton Plaza, etc) and add to check out the SD Weekly online to see if there are any special events going on. Just visited there and that website gave me a lot to see!
Also, check out Little Italy if you can (sweet!)
