It means it is just the drive and doesn't contain any cables, manuals, etc. They can sell it for cheaper if they don't include the entire kit.

Sometimes they will buy the OEM version, which typically is meant for companies that build systems and include their own cables, etc, so they just need the drive. Getting it that way is cheaper for them, and buying it ends up being cheaper for you.

Just realize you probably need a cable along with it, unless you already have a SATA connection available in your system.

Check out this link, and search for the words "bare drive":

That is all Newegg has to say about it. The word accessories as they use it seems to indicate that the cable does not come with the drive.

    Excerpt from their Product FAQ:

"What does "Bare Card," "Bare Drive," or "Drive Only" mean?

These items come exactly as they are described. Although these items are brand new, they are purchased in bulk and do not include any documentation, software or accessories.

Suggestion: Most drivers and documentation can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. Refer to the Product Images to see exactly what is included with the product you're interested in."

    Bare Drive

It is simply a Hard Drive just like you are used to buying at a computer store ie: Best Buy etc. You take it home, open the box, remove drive from protective bag and that is it. Nothing else in box. Simply clone it (copy everything from old drive), install in computer, and away you go.

"Bare drive" means it's just the hard drive. It doesn't come with cables, software, or screws. You need to have them yourself.

I would guess it means you are getting a hard drive and that's it. It has no information on it (like an operating system). It probably comes with no cables or cooling accessories. It's a hard drive and nothing else.

  • It is an OEM drive. If you do not know what OEM means, check out
