Present-day Cumbria (created 1974) is a combination of two counties: Cumberland
and Westmoreland (also spelt Westmorland).
The creators of Cumbria also added the North Lonsdale or Furness part of Lancashire and the Sedbergh Rural District from the West Riding of Yorkshire.
The original names (Cumberland and Westmoreland) were in existence in the 16th century.
