I'd suggest downloading this guide (it's free) for tips on how to end your scarf.http://www.loomknitting.com/catalog.php?...
Am I right in that you want to leave the ends open so a person could put their hand in between the two layers? If you want the ends closed, I would still end the same way, but use fringe to close the ends. This shows how to fringe a scarf, but instead of going through one stitch you would lay your scarf flat and go through both thicknesses. http://crochet.about.com/od/clothingforw...
And yes, brown and black are definitely masculine.
    Hope this helps!
