Is there really such thing as a race?

Like, if we're all somehow DISTANTLY related, can we really have a race?

    race technically doesn't exist

    its socially constructed

meaning society created it by defining people based on what they looked like

however, since society as a whole buys into it there's not much more open minded people can do, other than use terms like culture and ethnicity in discussions about differences between people.

not everybody with brown skin is the same and its probably not a good idea to think of them as all a part of the same group.

its good to know there's still intelligent people like you around to understand "race" is ridiculous

Yes and no. The problem is in the language, and the lack of a common accepted definition of what "race" is.

When we begin to observe the common differences among people different from ourselves we labled it "race." The word itself is nothing but a streamlined explanation of a type of difference that can be found in human beings. We may all be the same species but we are of different "races." The language used to describe these differences is all very arbitrary. Black and white for example works fine until you begin to observe the differences between a Nigerian and an Ethiopian or an Italian and a German. Like I said it is all very arbitrary.

Yes, there is such a thing as race. That's why there are racial differences. If there was no such thing we'd all be exactly the same.
