Can I put a PCI-Express x8 card into a PCE-Express x16 slot?

The card is an areca ARC-1210 SATA-II controller. The motherboard is an ASUS Rampage Extreme.

Yup, that's no problem at all. You can even put a PCI-Express X16 card in a X8 slot, if you carefully file a gap in the edge of the slot, but I wouldn't recommend it.

All that will happen in your case is that the RAID controller will happily use 8 lanes of the x16 slot.
