Are UAW Workers Nearly as Skilled as McD Workers?

McD workers typically go on to get their degrees and become engineers, lawyers, nurses, doctors, scientists, etc.

What do UAW workers do other than put parts together for 30 years at high wages?

Update 2:

Even Obama's Chief of Staff worked at Arbys.

Update 3:

Boss, teachers get paid less than UAW workers. Hmmmm.... So do nurses. Who is more important?

I don't think I've ever been to a mickyD that wasn't fully staffed by retarded people. On the other hand you don't seem to have the concept of a career. Auto workers who work for 30 years or more get a splendid retirement and make more than most of the occupations you mentioned. So who is the dummy?

Lots of teachers I know make more than that. Nurses do, too.

The issue is, if you open your hamburger and there is no pickle, you eat it anyway. You may miss your pickle, but McDonald's knows that you won't stop buying hamburgers there. They save oodles of money by hiring people with zero job skills and keeping them that way. And they get a tax break for "traning" them, despite the fact that they don't train them as required by the program. They make sure that the workers know the company considers them just warm bodies who could be replaced by anybody at all, and the workers give them the same respect back. The workers think the job is a joke, and when they quit they just don't come in to work again.

If the auto assembly line worker is as untrained as a typical McDonald's worker, and they mess up because they're goofing with their friends or they're new on the job or because they're the irresponsible kind that McDonald's hires to save money on labor, you could have a lemon, or you could have a fatal accident. Despite all your bloviating here and now, you would be hiring a lawyer and suing for millions of dollars. If somebody doesn't come into work, the line doesn't run. Big 3 automakers know that without a stable, committed workforce their production costs would be much higher, their product would be garbage and nobody would buy it.

I agree with you completely. I worked as a waitress, cashier, and bank teller while in college.

To the answerer who keeps posting about how $28/hr is a small amount to make sure your family is safe... the people who design the cars and get everything together for the assembly line do that.

I have toured an auto manufacturing plant and I have seen all the machines and tools that the line workers use...they do nothing. They use a machine that presses the dash into the skeleton of a car in 30 seconds...they're not even bolting anything.

Many of the positions at an assembly plant essentially require no skill at all. Shooting screws, snapping in parts, attaching connectors - these things take less skill than operating a cash register.

Other jobs are certainly skilled positions - the skilled trades certainly, but also line set up, repairmen, incoming / quality inspection, fork lift driver, etc.

But why move out of such a high paying and secure job? With a UAW job, you were able to own a home, send your kids to college, own a boat, maybe even a cabin on a lake, etc.

These people have tedious jobs with repetitive motions and they have to hustle. They make a living wage and compared to the trillions we will eventually have to pay financial intuitions with their grossly over paid workers 15 billion dollars is peanuts- some billionaires are worth that much and are well served by the Republicans- what about 2 million people's jobs?

The typical auto plant worker has a HS diploma or GED...NOT a college Diploma...and the average factory worker in the US is around $15 an hour..These earn almost double.NO they DO NOT deserve $28 an hour plus a benefit package that makes congresses look cheap....

What no one ever hears about is the damage that happens to auto workers. The longer you our on the line you will have disabilities it is just a matter of time.

You have to be mechanically inclined and know how to fallow procedures and be able to test assemblies.

Maybe you should ask them. Those companies only hire the best.

There are college grads working to put cars together.

$28 an hour isn't too much to make sure the job is done right, so your family is safer while sitting in an automobile.

No, but nearly as much so as Starbucks workers, especially those of the IWW type.

Stop the unions, that is the only way to stop the rapid decline into socialism.
