What do the white zigzag road markings in London indicate?

The straight lines now and then turn to zigzag. We don't have those in America.

    The zig zag lines, which are in use all over the country, are found on the approach to any form of pedestrian crossing. They denote an area where vehicles should not be parked because it causes a vision obstruction to do so, and where you should not pass the leading moving vehicle...this is for pedestrian safety. These lines are also outside of school entrances though they are coloured yellow.
