Is an Alaskan Malamute a good dog companion?

I read that they are half wolf. And that they can always turn on you.

The Alaskan Malamute is not for the novice dog owner. This breed is very dominant and needs an owner that is experienced in dog behavior. The AM is a working breed and the adult dog and requires 2 1/2h to 3h of daily exercise. Weekly dog training classes are a MUST on top of training sessions during the week at home. For a person who prefers the outdoor lifestyle and does not mind walking its dog is the p1ss1ng rain or sub zero temperatures this dog is wonderful.

However socialization with other dogs and people is VERY important. Your house will never be hair free and a big back garden is very important. These dogs are very destructive when left alone for too long therefor mental stimulation's is highly recommended.

To learn more about this wonderful breed, google Alaskan Malamute forums.

Any dog can turn on you, and the malamute is a dog, not a wolf.

Malamutes are large, dominating dogs, you need a lot of experience to handle them, they are NOT for beginner owners. If you do get your sugar gliders or chinchillas, they will likely chase them down and kill them, they are renowned for killing cats and small animals. They need a lot of space, a lot of exercise and cannot usually be let off the leash because they just disappear. They shed tonnes of hair, and if you live in a temperate climate they can overheat without your help with keeping them cool. A malamute, husky or other sled dog is like a full time job.

Alaskan Malamutes can be wonderful dogs and that are domesticated dogs not wild like wolf hybrids or wolves are. They do need some training and good socializing but can be wonderful family pets.

No they are not half wolf. But do tend to have an independent streak, and are even known to sometimes show agression. Think about it before you decide to get one, and always meet the parents and make sure you like them first.

Depends on the dog's pedigree. They can be stubborn and difficult to train for the inexperienced owner.

They are good dogs but they need lots of room and out doors time. Hard to handle for the inexperienced handler.
