Currently I'm reading Philip Jose Farmer's "Riverworld" series. "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" and "The Fabulous Riverboat" were great reads.
Possibly the BEST Sci-fi piece I've ever read, however, is Harry Turtledove's "Guns of the South" - an awesome bit of alternate history wherein racist time travelers supply the Confederacy with modern weaponry, thus changing the course of the War Between the States.
Utterly fascinating on various levels, from the political intrigue to the foot soldier in the field.
