The 'SRD' (System Recovery Disk) will re-install the OS to factory shipped parameters if you have it, but, be aware that a single 'overwrite' (as a 'format install' would provide) is inadequate for a secure transfer of a hard drive.

Residual magnetic data can be recovered from the drive if it's not overwritten at least 5-7 times.

"Dariks Boot and Nuke (DBAN)" runs from a bootable CD or Floppy disk, and securely deletes (wipes) the entire content of the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect. The program is perfect for cleaning a computer before giving it away or selling it. You will download an ISO file, that needs to be burned to a CD.

Best bet is to reinstall the operating system ie. win xp or win 98, that came with the computer or the one you are currently using. It will remove all your private files and the computer will be like new.

Also do wipe clean the outside of the computer, Get a can of air from local store (walmart), and open computer and spray it inside to rid of the dust around cpu, pwr supply, fan and motherboard. this will make it look new inside to, just in case the buyer might want to check.

If you don't have a disc with the windows it's gonna be differcult. But if you do, insert it and format the disk several times to insure everythings gone, then install windows again, leaving it clean with the windows.

If you don't have the disc i think the only option is to go through your drive and delete every personal files, though you might miss something.

Source(s): Just what i know ;) I'd check with microsoft for a better solution.

    Hi there,

The first thing to do to speed up pc and get rid of malwares and viruses is cleaning the registry with a program like CCLeaner http://bitly.com/UrAS6r

    Give it a try.

if you have a windows installation cd, then you will have to reformat the whole computer (usually takes 30 min), and install it under the buyers name, but you will have to search for the drivers on the internet if you dont have the original drivers cd

Reformat the hard drive? Or do you mean physically cleaning?

Put in your windows disk, then just reinstall windows completely, it will reformat the drive, erasing all of your data/programs.
