The liver enzymes can signify a problem or
damage to the liver cells or biliary area.
However, these blood tests are not 100%
accurate...so it may take a series of them
to be done before you receive treatment.
Let me explain. The ALT is specific to
the liver, meaning it is made mostly in the liver.
This is just one of the enzymes they usually
test for. Therefore, if this level is high...then
they believe it may be because of damage to
the liver cells or inflammation of the liver cells.
The AST test is not only found in the liver
but in other organs as well. So this just helps
confirm a diagnoses of a liver problem...but
by this test alone, without the ALT...a determination could not be made.
The ALK Phos is found mostly in the biliary area.
Under the liver, which is located in the upper
right quadrant just under the ribs, there is
bile ducts that come from inside the liver and
lead to the gallbladder and to the intestines.
Anything that blocks the flow of bile in these
ducts, like a stone or because the bile ducts are
not formed well, can cause a rise in the
Alk phos levels. However, this ALK phos is
also found when there is bone (skeleton)
growing or a problem there.
What people need to understand is that
this testing only shows what might be wrong...
it is not definite...doctors do other testing
to see more of what may be going on.
The doctor also does blood work, known
as the "liver function tests."..to see if the
cells of the liver are able to do the functions
they once did to keep the body healthy.
He can tell by these tests if the cells
may be damaged and how much.
The doctor may also feel the area where the
liver is located, as I mentioned above.
He is looking to see if the liver is enlarged.
He can sometimes feel only the lower edge of
the liver under the rib cage.
The liver is a smooth and soft organ. If
you ever cooked liver, you know what it looks
like. When inflammation develops, it enlarges
and takes on a spongy appearance.
If the doctor suspects inflammation, he may
order an untrasound to see the liver better.
He can also see if there are stones in the
biliary area, if there are any growths, and
also may see the blood flowing through the
I know it is hard to wait to talk with your doctor.
Because he knows what your test results
are, he knows what your past medical history
is...he is the best one to tell you for certain
if you have a liver problem or if it could be
A liver problem can be caused by any
number of things: alcohol consumption,
medication toxification, chemical exposure,
biliary obstruction or malformation, fatty
liver, viral infections such as Hepatitis A,B,C,etc,
auto immune disease, hereditary conditions.
mushroom poisoning, raw fish consumption,
A problem with the liver can cause inflammation
of the liver cells. If the inflammation is
treated and the cause removed...then the
cells of the liver may heal. That is if it is
caught early on before the cells of the liver
start to die.
I hope you find out soon and will be treated
This is only for your information.
I hope this helps.
