Does anyone else think Kurt Cobain sucked at writing lyrics ?

I think his lyrics were a result of bad poetry at best , they don't sound poetic at all, anyone could write those lyrics , just put a bunch of words together and say it makes sense , he was a decent musician , true , but don't tell me his lyrics made sense because they did NOT.

Update:

"Sloan " oh really , how in the world would " polly wants a cracker" make sense ? give me a break , that's bad poetry at best.

Update 2:

Sloan : "when Madonna, Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback and Justin Timberlake exist? "

because they are not even worth talking about.

Update 3:

"Chris " whatever man , i know what that song is about ..it's ok .. the lyrics still suck though lol.

Update 4:

"David Brent" that's true but just because he died his fans want to believe his lyrics made sense when they obviously did not , he said that himself in an interview , Kurt Cobain said " they don't really make sense" , i'm not the one saying that , he said that.

Update 5:

"A study by America's top scientists found highly intelligent people can understand " ooh really , link please ? , nirvana fans keep saying that but i'm yet to see a link , and anyway , no study could make his lyrics sound poetic , they were nonsense and will remain nonsense , if you believe otherwise you're fooling yourself.

Well...I write and read alot of poetry myself, and I can assure you Cobains lyrics were not his main strength. They are very simple, and sometimes made no sense. It does make me laugh when people mention Cobain as a great lyricist....it really is laughable. His strength was writing catchy melodies, and that is what he excelled in.

If kurt had released his lyrics on their own as poetry, nobody in their right mind would want to read them. They were meant to be secondry to the music.

talk about drama people.......what the heck is up with all the negativity? what's with all the thumbs-downs?

Sure he claimed that some of his lyrics didn't make sense (listen to the lyrics of 'On a Plain' lol) but that doesn't mean that there's no meaning behind it, right? Sheesh, I'm tired of all the Nirvana/Kurt Cobain hatred on R&P.

As I've stated many times before, Nirvana is overrated with the fans and underrated with the haters......all you haters need to realize that his band was NOT the worst thing to happen to music as you claim!

During their prime, they were critically acclaimed! I bet if R&P existed in 1992, everyone would be raving about how great they were!

Many of you hate them because they became legends after Kurt's death. So what? When I first listened to them, I didn't get into the band because of his death, but because of the MUSIC. Who cares if he's dead? I would listen to Nirvana whether Kurt Cobain was dead or alive. damn

No, I'm not trying to get all you haters to became fans or anything, but you have to give the band credit and respect.

GSP: your welcome :) but your answer was good too!

Sorry about this, I'm posting a section from wikipedia

Grohl said that Cobain told him, "Music comes first, lyrics come second," and Grohl believes that above all Cobain focused on the melodies of his songs.Cobain was still working on the album's lyrics well into the recording of Nevermind. Additionally, Cobain's phrasing on the album is often difficult to understand. Vig asserted that clarity of Cobain's singing wasn't paramount. Vig said, "Even though you couldn't quite tell what he was singing about, you knew it was intense as hell."Cobain would later complain when rock journalists attempted to decipher his singing and extract meaning from his lyrics, writing "Why in the hell do journalists insist on coming up with a second-rate Freudian evaluation of my lyrics, when 90 percent of the time they've transcribed them incorrectly?"

Is it says, melodies were more important to him than the lyrics

I think he wrote great lyrics for what he was trying to do. He was trying to capture his emotions not write epic poetry.

Also the song Polly is about a girl being raped (based on a true story) go back and actually listen to the lyrics before you criticize. He was using a play on the name polly being a common parrot name

Hey, leave Madge out of this you two!

I think Kurt Cobain wrote good lyrics. If you don't think so that's fine.

I do know that I was actually alive and over age 12 when Nirvana was wildly popular. I love when people born after he died try to tell me about that band.

Half of the best songs out there really don't make a whole lick of sense sometimes if you realy break them down.

I'm no Cobain expert, but his songs always seemed to paint a pretty vivid picture with words.

Thats the real point of poetry/lyrics anyways, not a comprehensive disertation on a given subject.

I have the feeling you're just pickin' a fight anyway, So I won't waste any more time...

EDIT : To the dude below me...

I think you need to re-read my post.

    I appreciate Cobain's songs.

That's because he didn't write the lyrics first. He wrote the music and did all of the instruments before he wrote the lyrics. That's why Nirvana sounded so melodic.

I'd like to think that Nirvana took lots of their cues from the punk handbook. ie: DIY- polished guitar playing & "perfect" lyrics be damned. For Cobain, it was about feel.
