Howard won federal elections in 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2004 - so he won 4 times.
The opposition leaders each time were:
(i) in 1998: Kim Beazley
(ii) in 2001: Kim Beazley
(iii) in 2004: Mark Latham
Note that in 1994 Howard beat Paul Keating, who was Prime Minister (and so not opposition leader at the time).
Howard was beaten by an opposition leader in 2007. That leader, Kevin Rudd, is now the Australian PM.
