What does a SELECT Statement do? (what's it's purpose?)

    SELECT statement also known as query statement sends command to the command interpreter (e.g. vb) to select specified fields from the specified table/stored procedure.

    when command interpreter recieves select command it first search for the table (using connection string) and then look for the specified fields and brings back the specified filtered/unfiltered data to the memory. then programme can access this data as and when required till the connection is not closed.

    It selects something from a database so you could have:

    SELECT * FROM thetable WHERE id = 1

    so its selecting all from the table where the id is one.
