You live in the perfect town as Los Angeles is the defacto center for the professional film industry.

The first step is to learn the overview of how this industry truly works. I'll urge that your very first step be to read "What I Really Want to Do: On Set in Hollywood." That will tell you everything you need to know about who does what and how it all truly works without any gratuitous name-dropping and useless anecdotes that don't apply to you.

THEN, you need to determine what PRECISELY it is you want to do. What job is it that you want as a career? It isn't enough to just say you want to be in the business or be a "filmmaker." The industry is very specialized and it is very important that you make choices that will guide you toward your ultimate goal and to do that, you have to know what that goal really is. Again, the book above will help you to focus and make a choice.

Then, you might decide that you'd like to attend a filmschool. There are several in the LA area and 36 total university level programs in California in addition to numerous private workshops. If you aren't limited to California, there are over 700 schools worldwide. For a complete list of all of those schools and programs, visit http://www.whatireallywanttodo.com. Click on the Filmschools link and the Resources link to find all of the information you could possibly need.

    Good luck!
