I'm not sure there is a "one person" answer. The contributions of many African Americans have been hugely significant. For example:

Martin Luther King, Jr. held a tremendous influence over people of all races. His non-violent protests, inspiring words and courage changed ways of thinking, changed laws, changed the country and in many ways the course of history.

George Washington Carver's contributions to agriculture were and still are tremendously significant, economically and socially. In addition, his many discoveries (peanut butter and some 200+ other uses for peanuts and soybeans) and improvements to many things (adhesives, axle grease, bleach, buttermilk, chili sauce, fuel briquettes, ink, instant coffee, linoleum, mayonnaise, meat tenderizer, metal polish, paper, plastic, pavement, shaving cream, shoe polish, synthetic rubber, talcum powder and wood stain) are still used today. It should be noted that he never made a dime off any of his developments or inventions, rather donating them to his fellow man.
