In CA, how old do you have to start working legally?

Birth. However they are some serious restrictions in place until you are 16. Most nonperformance jobs will not hire you if you are under 16.

Legally, you may not work a day of you live if you can afford it in California. Or you can start working as early as you like. Working to earn money is a different thing. I would say you should be 16-17 to be hired legally.

You never HAVE to, but it's a good option if you want to support yourself instead of sponging off someone else.
