Does my Gbic Fiber Switch use SONET Multiplexing?
I have a couple simple fiber optic switches that transfer data to 5 different buildings. the fiber is terminated at a Netgear Gbic unit on either side, which is then plugged into the Netgear switches.
I was just wonder what protocol is used within the fiber line between the Gbics. is it SONET Multiplexing?

Directly connected fiber switches are using "Fast-Ethernet". A Sonnet network is a WAN transport technology that has nothing to do with site to site or Point-To-Point directly connected networks.Source(s): Network Engineer

Gbics use ethernet. Even with fiber.Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gbic

You said you have a switch, right? Then it should be Gigabit Ethernet not SONET.
