Who was Washington Irving trying to reach with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"?
Who do you he wanted his audience to be?

Could just be he wanted to tell a local story that had been passed down by word of mouth
Maybe his target audience were school masters who were trying to increase their status through marriage
To me it just sounds like a ghost story to warn people about staying away from certain places

The story was written mostly for the entertainment of American citizens as far as I know. It was written during the Age of Romanticism in America. Its basically just a ghost story.
