By "4-star movie" I assume you're referring to a standard large budget "Hollywood" movie that has a wide theatrical release?

Individual deals and rates do vary depending upon a Director's track record, but the DGA (Director's Guild of America) does have a contracted minimum that Director's must AT LEAST be paid:

THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE MINIMUMS 7/1/08 to 6/30/11

    Weekly Salary $15,108 Guaranteed

    Preparation Period 2 Weeks

    Guaranteed Employment Period 10 Weeks

    Guaranteed Cutting Allowance 1 Week

Compensation for Days Worked Beyond Guarantee $3,022

    Daily Employment Where Permitted $3,777

As mentioned, those are the minimums (see DGA.org link below for actual ratecard), but established Directors (their Agents, actually) regularly negotiate their own deals which can be substantially more than the DGA minimums. Also, they can negotiate substantial deals for a share of box-office revenue which are unpublished.
