Veggie's/ Vegan's? (Long, sorry) :)?

I made the decision yesterday to become vegetarian.

I've been thinking about it for a long time and well, something struck a chord I guess.

Aswel as me myself, I don't think I'm very healthy. Im not particularly over-weight but I often get dizzy-spells and black out.

I believe that if I become healthier, this could easily involve helping animals too.

I have become very aware of suffering animals go through to produce our meat, like battery chickens and such.

Im 15 and have done a little research about vegetarianism, I understand that I have to make sure Im taking in my necessary nutrients etc, and clearly this can be done without consuming animals.

I was kind of sceptic, about veganism (no offence to anyone but it seemed maybe a bit extreme at first?)


upon my research, I have seen why people do so.

Bcause aswel as being exploited for meat animals are also exploited for their milk.

I told my mum about becoming vegetarian, lets say she didnt take to it well and isnt happy about preparing 2 meals. But I told her that Id rather not eat animals, especally the ones who have suffered immensly(the cheap ones) which my family can really afford.

I am now thinking about veganism but it seems to be a big step.

with soy products and stuff. and organic.

What are your views on the consumtion of eggs and cheese?

I understand that everyone has different views so it would be nice if people didnt put eachother down. ;]

My question is really

How difficult was it for you to become veggie/vegan?

were you young at the time?

any advice?

    I became a vegetarian just before I turned 13. I started phasing out meat in November and the last time I ate chicken was the following January. I was never a big fan of meat. I stopped eating lamb when I was 5 because I made the connection, thing on plate = fluffy cute thing in field. I stopped liking beef after the Foot and Mouth scares and once Bird Flu made it to Western Europe, I stopped eating chicken. I kept eating fish but my diet was really, really unhealthy. I cut fish out after a year but I started eating it again, I had to because my diet was so bad. I started cooking for myself and I was eating really healthily. I finally stopped eating fish again. This all happened over 2 years. I was then eating a fairly healthy vegetarian diet for another year.

    I had been researching veganism for a while and I decided to try it for a week during mid-term. Well, that was a month ago and I'm still a vegan. It's hard but not as hard as I thought. I thought I would really miss milk and cheese but I don't as much as I thought. The main annoyance is having to read food labels even more then I had to when I was a vegetarian. I still haven't announced it to my friends, I don't want to just in case I fail.

    When people ask you why are you vegetarian/vegan you need to have your ideas ready. You will get asked, especially in school. Soy products are nice, I find the Alpro Soya yoghurts nice and creamy. I don't really like the taste of the soy or almond milks that are available to me. I mainly use rice milk on cereal and in baking. I use Tofutti Cheezly and it melts well and when you add it to sauces it tastes lovely.

    I think I'm eating way healthier now than I ever did. A lot of it is because I don't pig out chocolate anymore. And I can't have Ben and Jerrys :(. But I have lost weight. I've been hovering between sizes and now I'm down to the smaller sizes in everything. It's brilliant! My skin has been clear but I didn't have a break out in the last month which usually happens one a month, if you catch my drift ;). I am also drinking more water because I haven't been drinking milk with my dinner. I have been eating way more salads in school and because there's no vegan food in my school shop, I have been saving money.

    Overall my family is supportive. My mam seems ok with it all and has made me some divine food lately. She's even ok with buying my rice milk, veganaise and soy cheese. My dad has no comment on it, I think he's a little confused. We have had one talk but when I sensed it turning bad I just made a joke about it. My brother seemed really opposed at the start. He thought I would never eat anything and always question restaurant staff about what was in the food. I have defied the first one and the last time we went out there was no problem.

    I'm 13 and I became a vegetarian about 6 months ago, it was hard for me at first because i really liked meat, but after a while it was ok. Now I don't miss it at all. Being a vegan is a bit extreme for me as I'm still growing, but my mum buys products like free range eggs so we can be sure the animals don't suffer.

    My family weren't keen on me being a vegetarian either, because I won't get the right nutrients. Now I have QUORN, it's tastes like meat a bit, but it isn't. It's really nice and does contain the nutrients meat has, although it is safer to get the vitamins from other foods too.

    I know I made the right decision about becoming a vegetarian and I like to know that I am helping reduce the number of animals being killed for their meat.

    My advice is that if this is really what you want then go for it! It is hard to start with and your immune system is low (when I became a veggie I got the flu) so you will proberly become a bit ill, but your body will become used to the change and then you will be ok :) .

    I strongly advise you to see a doctor first as regardless of your diet feeling dizzy and blacking out a lot isn't normal and needs looking into no matter what you decide about being vegetarian.

    As for the diet well I am now vegetarian but am thinking about becoming vegan in the fairly near future. However many of the vegans I've spoken to online and elsewhere seem to agree that going straight to vegan from an omnivore diet can be hard so going vegetarian first for a while and then going vegan later if you want to is probably the best way.

    That way you will get used to looking at labels on food to make sure it's vegetarian and after that checking to make sure it's also egg,honey and milk free won't be that much of a chore. It will also let your body adjust gradually and get you used to eating a different diet.

    I would advise you to eat some tofu and other soya products as a vegetarian though. Getting protein as a vegetarian purely from cheese and eggs can easily mean you taking in too much saturated fat and cholesterol.

    As for your mum-offer to help cook the vegetarian meal yourself to help get her support.

    Personally I found becoming a vegetarian very easy but it's different for everyone.

    Hey hey! I am a vegetarian and I made the decision to become one 2 years ago. I was 22. I had previously tried when I was 13 but, bc of my horrible eating habits and how picky I was it just wasnt possible. When I was 22 and made the choice to become one I had to give myself a pep talk and told myself I may not like some of the food I am going to eat but, I am doing it for a purpose. Two tears later I still hate; tomatoes, olives and onions. But, thats ok. You needto become great friends with tofu and portabella mushrooms. Cheap and so easy to make. Use these as a sub for meat in things. Ports are soo good when cooked and put on a bun likea hamburger. Yummmmm When I first made the transition it was soo hard, Im not gonna lie. I would literally have dreams about eating meat! But, weeks passed and my cravings slowly began to subside! I cant even remember what meat tastes like now! When you go to the store with your mom check out Morning Star and Boca products they are really trial and error but, I will tell you one thing they really got the fake chicken right! Soo good. Get lots of greens, broc, lettuce, etc. When you have a salad throw some cauliflower, broc, carrots veggies on it and top it off with sunflower seeds. Delicious! Also, make sure you eat lots of fruits and nuts. AND beans!!! Checkout the web for all sorts of recipes. Get some vitamin b-12. and You are set! Take care of yourself and makesure you eat right!

    As far as eggs and milk goes, thats a personal choice and completely up to you!!!

    If you are having dizzy spells and blacking out you need to talk to yor md about that! Dont listen to anyone on these answer sites, talk to your mom and get to a doctor.

    Two things.

    URGENT: You need to understand why you have dizzy spells and black out and absolutely must not change your diet until you have an answer. If you are blacking out due to anaemia (I assume you are female so might have heavy periods) then you must keep your iron levels up through your diet and if you cut out meat you might need a vitamin supplement. At any rate PLEASE go to your doctor and talk about this urgently as it is NOT NORMAL to be blacking out.

    VEGGIE My daughter was younger went she went veggie purely through a sudden disgust of eating dead animals. My husband is also a veggie so that was easy. However at 15 and if you have a busy mum you will need to offer her some help to accommodate your needs. For example YOU will need to learn to cook a few basic meals that you can make in batches and that can then be frozen and used as required. You could also offer to cook for everyone and see if they like your veggie recipes, maybe there are things you can all eat.

    If you are willing to put in a big effort then she will probably be more sympathetic. Veggie meals can also be much cheaper (if you make them yourself) so that might help.

    You have to sort out the eggs/cheese bit for yourself no good asking what others think, but again think about how you will replace the calcium in your diet if you cut them out and check and see if you actaully like soy milk.

    It's a tough life being the only veggie in a family but it can be done. You need to be consistent though - no good saying you will eat eggs one week and then not the next.

    Hope thats helpful. Now wht are you going to do tomorrow morning? That's right make and appointment with the doc - you should also talk to them about wanting to be a veggie when you mention your blackouts.

    I was 18 when I became a vegetarian (many years back). It was considered even weirder at that time and there was nothing to help me or my family out about it.

    I would advise that you become vegetarian first as it makes it easier for your mum. Cheese, other dairy products and eggs are very good sources of protein. It is best to make sure that cheese is vegetarian (ie made without rennet which comes from calve stomachs) but many are these days. also eggs are best free-range and/or organic rather than battery.

    Grains and pulses are also good sources of protein and B vitamins. Marmite is good for B12. A lot of vegetarian food is cheap and nourishing and filling. it's not all salads and neither does it mean meat replacement foods although soymince (dried or frozen) is a quick and easy means of getting protein.

    Learn to cook - that will help your mum and you. Lots of good Indian food is vegetarian, also Italian food is good. there are some good writers out there - Rose Elliott is excellent for basic vegetarian food but get interested in food generally and find out about it.

    Well when i started being vegetarian i found it really easy a lot of people seem to think that you have to get special cook books, pills, supplements and so on... i found that the easiest way for me is just get a normal cook book and whack in some fake meet instead. so i didn't find it hard. On eating milk and cheese and eggs, yes i believe that in an ideal world i wouldn't but i love cheese so much and would really struggle to find affordable substitutes.. I was 16 when i became veggie

    Firslty go and see you doctor about the dizzyness/ blackouts. that's kinda really serious, and won't be caused by eating meat.

    I sort of became vegetarian by accident. My mother in law was telling me that vegetarians must have a really boring diet, and i said that wasn't true, or necessary. We had a bit of a row about it, and i said i'd cook a good variety of tasty healthy, vegetarian food for me and my husband for a week, without resorting to 'fake meat' like soya mince, or quorn pieces.

    I did that, neither of us missed the meat, and so we carried on. We have two rules,

    1, if occasionally one of us wants meat, we'll get a small amount of good quality meat for a special meal

    2, we don't use quorn or soya mince stuff. You really don't need to.

    I've found it really easy to do, and one way to help your mum might be to start cooking your own meals, or offer to cook for the family once a week, that way they can all learn to appreciate what you eat, and that it can be a really delicious way of life. Try doing bean burgers for your family, or pasta with a veg and tomato sauce, or a veg casserole, this one is excellent:

    It's not really fair to ask your mum to make major changes to how she cooks, especially when you're old enough to be helping her out, and cooking your own. And cooking for yourself will help you understand the nutiriton behind what you eat.

    I eat eggs milk and cheese still as i really enjoy them, and think that for me, veganism would be a step too far.

    You need to get a couple of good veggie books, a good one is the student vegetarian book by hamlyn, and it's cheap too...

    I have this one and use it regularly. Make sure you eat plenty of fresh veg, and a wide variety too. Make sure you eat pulses as these are good for protein

    Basically i feel that any diet can be good or bad. Meat-eaters aren't guaranteed to get all the nutrients they need anymore than veggies are, and bad diet is a bad diet, whether it includes meat or not

    Finally, there is a good vegetarian magazine just started (if you're in the UK) which i would recommend you get (called cook vegetarian, and is available in Asda and most other supermarkets)

    i became i veg. two days ago. i really didn't put alot of thought into it. my mom does not want me to be a vegetarian, for the same reason as yours.try eating the soy meats and things mixed with tofu. also go to your library and pick out some cookbooks for vegetarians.

    there are some awesome food out there for vegetarians. hope i helped=]

    props to you, little guy. it's all a blur for me now, but i'll do the best to resuscitate my memories. i was 15 when i went vegetarian and 16 when i went vegan. it wasn't tough in terms of missing meat, dairy, or eggs. i never missed them that much. my dad was also skeptical but eventually he came around. now he even makes vegan bread and bought me a vegan cookbook for christmas. :) so my advice to you is that while it may be tough at home for awhile, things will change, your parents will alleviate. eventually, they may even talk to friends saying "oh, yeah. my daughter's a vegetarian" without making that scowling face. as far as nutrition goes, just make sure you consume a lot of vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and calcium from somewhere. you can get calcium from plenty of sources

    that site can be good for other vitamin sources in the vegan diet, as well as protein and iron. i suggest you introduce yourself to tofu if you haven't already, by buying a block and preparing yourself a recipe from online :)
