9.5.2.3 Network Architecture for PACS

PACS is high-volume image dataintensive system and requires a very high bandwidth. In a peer-to-peer type architecture ( Section 6.4.1 ), image data are not as critically time sensitive because the image data are mostly prefetched to the local workstation’s storage. However, if the PACS is a client/server-type architecture ( Section 6.4.2 ) it is time sensitive because of the expectation of on-demand viewing of images. The image data are not stored locally, but rather they are retrieved on demand over the network. Therefore, this becomes time sensitive, and the network bandwidth must be capable of delivery of the data within a couple of seconds. The network must be designed with Ethernet of gigabits and higher on the backbone with multiple cross-connections to provide redundancy. All PACS servers must have gigabit Etherent links to a sophisticated switching environment with high-bandwidth routing capability. In a large PACS with multiple subnets, high-bandwidth rounting to multiple subnets minimizes bottleneck at each routing point of image data distribution. All switches connected with PACS workstations must, at a minimum, be a gigabits Ethernet uplink to minimize bottlenecking at the edge switch level. Edge switch is a lower-end switch that serves the purpose of distributing images to PACS workstations, and it has no routing capability. Security is deployed at the top of the switch hierarchy to prevent and protect intrusion of unnecessary network traffic. Network management and traffic detection systems may also be deployed at the backbone level to help isolate potential hazardous conditions. The client workstation must have 100mbps duplex Ethernet, and high-volume on-demand workstations may even require gigabits Ethernet connections. Figure 9.8 depicts a generic PACS network.
