If an employer ask for references after an interview, does it mean that they are interested in hiring you?

Having the interview already has put you ahead of the "pack". However references may mean they need some clarification about you that they can only get from somebody else like a former employer.

And maybe they want to see if you truly did have those jobs or whether you are full of buffalo chips.
