Bacterial meningitis causes inflammation of the outer covering of the brain and spinal cord. It can progress rapidly and in some cases kill within hours.
The maningitis vaccine protects against four strains of bacterial meningitis, A, C, Y and W135.
The vaccine is safe and effective with infrequent and mild side effects. It stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the previously mentioned strains of meningococcal bacteria. It is not recommended for children under two years of age as the vaccine is ineffective i.e. it does not produce antibodies. Immunity lasts three to five years in adults.

I believe you can, but only one kind. There are different kinds of meningitis. One is bacterial and the other is a virus. I think Viral meningitis is the contagious one. I knew a girl who had the bacterial one once and she claimed her back hurt and her head hurt. I think some of the symptoms may be flu like as well.
