A friend of mine has jumped probation for a misdemeanor hot check under 50.00, what now?

He got 12 months probation, a $3,500.00 fine and 24 hrs of community service. He completed all of his community service had 3 months left on his probation and owes about $1000.00. He lost his job and home and was homeless, so he moved out of the county. They told him he would go to jail if he did not have all of his fees and fines paid by the last month of his probation. It was going to be impossible to do so, so he left. He wants to get this over with, and is working now. Should he pay the fines then turn himself in, or should he throw himself on the mercy of the court. He is in Texas by the way, if that makes any difference.
