Suggest a good smattering of serious animes?

I don't have any particular genre in mind, so long as it's at least 85% serious and not extraordinarily cheesy.

I love psychological thrillers, mysteries, horror, crime, drama, violence, plots with war in them, and I don't like shoujo (unless it's particularly good).

A bit of romance is fine. I like more realistic-styled animes, but I'll take whatever's good. I also am reluctant to watch an anime with over 45 episodes, but I can.

I adore things that are powerful, make you think, and hit you hard as well as confusing, depthful, symbolism-filled psychological animes (also known as WTF animes, lol).

I just want a big list with a small plot synopsis and review.

Holy crap. I forgot to say!

I've seen;

Death Note

Elfen Lied

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni

Serial Experiments: Lain

Perfect Blue

Paranoia Agent

(oh, and PLEASE REMEMBER A SHORT PLOT SYNOPSIS/REVIEW. I will disregard just lists)

you may want to try these:

ERGO PROXY = post apocalyptic world, a fortress that seems to be a perfect paradise/society but the old world is in ruins, a cold desolate place. The characters are = a paradise worker with a split personality, a gothic lady investigator with a big gun, an cute android infected with a virus. Add in a bossy villain and his right hand scientist with agendas of their own, mingle in this cyberpunk world.

PATLABOR (movies 1 and 2) = A future where mechas called "Labors" are a common scene. This robots help in manual work, factory work as well as police work. Some robots go berserk. Some outside force are controlling them, even if the implementor himself maybe dead (?).

JIN-ROH = an alternate Post World War 2 Japan. The urban place is divided among the wealthy and the urban poor. Activists and Military battle in the streets. There is a new breed of armed forces that balances the fight. A member of this forces and a lady activist get entangled in this conflict. It is a modern retelling of red riding hood.

GHOST IN THE SHELL (movies 1 and 2) and Stand Alone Complex = a future cyberpunk world where the difference between the virtual world and the real world is blurred. Humans upgrade themselves with cyborg parts, their brains a mixture of human memory and computer data. This semi-organic brain can be prone to a wide variety of attacks especially from hackers. An organization is made to battle these crooks who do cyber crime.

TEXNOHLYZE = a future where mankind evolves himself by implanting cybernetic materials inside his body. The future is bleak and those who gain advantage by adding cybernetic parts tend to enforce their power among the weak. Only a few seems to do justice with their implants.

you may also want to try:

MACROSS ZERO = dogfights and mecha battles. The search for the origins of mankind. Are we originally designed to fly. A pilot crashes into this native island where he may discover the real story behind man's form.

ANGEL'S EGG = an alternate future. Did we really survive the great flood or are we just living in a dream. This almost silent movie envisions a world where only shadows of humanity remains.

MERMAID FOREST = a suspense/horror anime about mermaids. A man finds himself cursed by eating mermaid flesh now he lives being an immortal but wants be become human again. She finds a girl that may change his fate, but this girl seems to be a magnet for monsters and creeps. This is made by the famed "Rumiko Takahashi".

VAMPIRE PRINCESS MIYU = Miyu could be an angel or the reverse. She grants wishes with her bite. She battles shinma, the evil spirits that lurk seeking human weaknesses. She is joined by the silent Larva who is a former shinma. (suspense/mystery, OAV and TV Series).

And if you haven't watched it yet:

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION = Something melted the icy part of Antarctica causing water to rise killing more than half of the worlds population. Those who survived built fortresses. Man has acquired mechanical beasts known as Evangelion Units to serve as a defense. Now the Angels return and the Eva Units are the ones to battle them. A whiny teenage boy now is called to pilot an Eva Unit and reluctantly he does pilot it. Why are we fighting Angels? Why are the pilots of the Eva Units seem to have psyche dilemmas. This is some real mind fu@#$!.

    Death Note (36eps)

I'd be surprised if you haven't heard about or seen this. But it's a Crime/mystery/suspense/thriller drama. The basis is that the main char finds a notebook that kills anybody who's name he writes in it. That sound's pretty lame. But the actual story is a crime-detective story that is a struggle between the main character and his unnamed investigator. According to what you seem to like, this would be perfect.

Code Geass ("r1" is 25 eps, "r2" is 25 eps. if you like r1, there is no way you wont watch r2 after the ending of r1)

Set in an alternate world where Britania (which is basically America-Britain) has taken over most of the world. They conquer japan and there is a rebellion. The main character gains an ability, called "geass," that he can use to make anybody do anything he commands, even kill themselves, if he can see into their eyes. It has fighting robots, but the story is more based around suspense and plot twists.

    Paprika (movie)

About a physiologist/doctor that has the technology to enter into dreams. She has an different personality in the dreams, a younger more outgoing girl, which she is not in real life. I think she goes into a criminals dreams or something to find out certain things. BEAUTIFUL movie. visual orgasm.

Paranoia Agent (13 eps i think)

Very odd anime. It's a little vulgar but works for the story. Basically there is this mysterious character that rolls around on rollerskating and kills people. It is confusing whether this is even true or not when other people start going crazy. Was there really a boy or are people just paranoid?

    Tekkonkinkreet (movie)

About two poor orphans who live in a big city. One boy has some mental problems, and the other has an obsession with protecting that one. The protected boy also has a portal to a dark self or something that has an effect on the story. Another beautiful movie. Really awesome animation and scenery.

    Spirited Away (movie)

This was released as a movie in America. It's not technically only a child movie, but there is nothing really vulgar in it, and it's rated pg i think. It's like other ghibli films. not really a thriller or anything.

Right now, I'm watching "Xam'd Lost Memories" which is really neat, beautifully animated, and different from regular anime-yet not obscure. And Kurozuka, which is about a guy who falls in love with a vampire back in 1800something. He eventually turns into a vampire, and the two of them travel through time (since they never die) The story is always focused around the man, and his search for her when he loses her(we never know more than the man). Kurozuka also has awesome fight scenes (not as awesome as Xam'd though, but they're different genres). Soul Eater too, but that's shonin and also comedic.

    edit: **** i started writing this b4 i saw that you listed the anime's you've seen. w/e.

OH YEAH and ******* DARKER THAN BLACK(26eps). Set in an alternate future where a huge wall is mysteriously constructed for some reason around the city. Certain people are turned into "contractors," people each with an ability, teliportation, electricity control, sonic singing, petrification/freeze, etc. But they must do a certain task after they use their power, stuff their mouths with something and then spit it out, turn peoples boots upside down, make a perfect row of pebbles, etc. My description may make it seem funny, but it's not. Good series with some good concepts. Some eps are slow, but it all works out.

Also you say you watched Gantz? It's a great anime... but the last few eps and ending are totally wtf.... That's because the anime wrapped up the series while the manga was still going. The manga continues on and you meet all sorts of new people/weapons/monsters, even new gantz groups. Also rules start to change. And you learn what happens when one gets 100 points... Everything becomes more epic. you should really read the manga.

since everyone's going with "Death Note," I'll suggest "Jigoku Shoujo" and its second season. this one's all about revenge and the effects it can bring on everyone else.

also, since you like the taught provoking kind of story line, I'll add Code Geass. it's like Death Note... with mechs. lol. but just because mechs are in it doesn't mean you should hate it.

crap, forgot to add Monster. it's like a modern search for the new anti-christ. great mystery involved in this one.

Death Note would probably be your best bet.

The series centers on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the titular "Death Note", dropped on Earth by a shinigami (death god) named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose face they have seen, by writing the victim's name in the notebook. The story follows Light's attempt to create and rule a world cleansed of evil using the notebook, and the complex conflict between him and his opponents.
