what did wilson hope to achieve in Versailles Treaty and what did he give up?

    He hoped to achieve, especially, self-determination among nations - each national group should have its own country in Europe; with some compromise where national groups would be too small to be politically and military viable. (eg, Czechoslavakia was set up instead of the Czech Republic and Slovakia; the formation of Yugoslavia instead of Croatia, Serbian, and son on.)

    That was his MAIN objective, but if you look at his 14 points, he achieved most except for freedom of trade in Europe. (Not acheived till Common Market began in 1955.) He also failed to get the US into the League of Nations, or get Congress to ratify the treaty of Versailles.

    (Not stated in the source above, but he probably was against the disastrous punishment given to Germany as a result of Versailles. He was the sort of person who would take the long-term view, and predict this punishment would lead to disaster.)
