a shotgun normally shoots a bunch of little bbs at the target, but a slug is designed so a shotgun can shoot one single big honking lead projectile instead

slugs are usually used for deer hunting

people in grizzly bear country use slugs to stop attacking bears

Slugs are fired from shotguns. There are different types of projectiles that shotguns can fire. Low base (bird shot), high base (buck shot), or slugs ( once single large chunk of steel or lead).

with the low base and high base shotgun shells, they have multiple beads inside them. as compared to a shotgun slug, the slug will do a lot more damage. there are also different types of slugs, there is the standard slug, and then there is the new hornady sst slugs. the hornady sst slugs look more like a rifle round, it travels faster than the standard slug, and can travel a longer distance and have better shot grouping than the standard shotgun slug. keep in mind, when looking at an unfired slug, it is still in the plastic casing. like any other bullet, it is set in the casing (the shell), and behind it, where the base of the shell is, the powder is there

As stated above slugs are solid projectiles fired from shotguns instead of shot, or multiple projectile loads that shotguns usually fire.

Slugs can also refer to any projectile fired from a pistol or rifle. This is a sort of generic term many shooters use for fired bullets.

They're a single lead projectile fired from a shotgun. They come in two varieties, one called a rifled slug, which has a twist on the sides, to create the spinning affect rifling from a rifle would impart on it. Or, you can get a shotgun that is made just for slugs, which has a rifled barrel.
