Songs for Armistice Day, R&P...?

Good Afternoon R&P :)

{yes, I know it is morning for many of you!}

It may be a little late in the day to be asking this, but considering that I can see only one other relevant question on the subject of today, I thought I would.

So... today is for remembering the fallen ~ the heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I'd like you all to suggest some suitable songs to mark the occasion.

'Silence' ~ Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan

At 8pm tonight, this will be happening live, at the only place in the world where it has happened every night of the year since 1928 {except during enemy occupation}, at the Menin Gate in Ypres : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pgtBP15CTOo&fmt=18

Honorary Walrus :

That was the 2nd song to come to mind when I thought of this Q :)

Update 2:

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

"But its written in the starlight, and every line on your palm

Were fools to make war on our brothers in arms"

That's always been one of my favourite Dire Straits songs :)

    Sammy Hagar- Remember the Heros

*Remember that Fleetwood Mac song I told you that my boss plays at work...Its playing as I wrote this...its called "Silver Springs"

I'm at work and youtube is blocked so here are the lyrics

    Stranger in a foreign land

    Fearful cries surround him

    Returning home a wounded man

To find he's been forgotten, yeah

Courage is the badge he wears

    Blinded by obsession

Wars are won by those who dare

    The memory still haunts him

    Remember the heroes

Who fight for the right to choose

    Remember the heroes

We've all got a lot to lose

A rebel to the naked eye

    An undiscovered legend

Face the facts and don't ask why

    It's something to believe in

In the dark, day and night

Fight for wrong to prove what's right

    Remember the heroes

Who fight for the right to choose

    Remember the heroes

    Just another life to use

    Remember the heroes

We've all got alot to lose

    (Remember the heroes)

    (Remember the heroes)

    (Remember the heroes)

    (Remember the heroes)

To take one life without a say

    Demanded without reason

To turn our backs and walk away

    A faceless act of treason

A father's son must carry on

    The wound is only deepened

    Remember the heroes

Who fight for the right to choose

    Remember the heroes

It's just another life to use

    Remember the heroes

You know we all got alot to lose

    Remember the heroes

    Who's gonna fill their shoes?

Here's a third try. I have submitted two answers, and both have disappeared.

My first thought on reading your question was a song you referenced already. You even quoted the relevant lines :)

    Here's my favorite YouTube version:

    ~Dire Straits, "Brothers in Arms"

Here is the second song I thought of, right on the heels of the first. It hit me like a kick in the solar plexus the first time I heard it, and it still has that effect. I picked one which sacrifices a bit of the sound because the video for it is so lovely.

~Big Country, "Come Back to Me"

(And yes, I was, and still am, very sad that Stuart Adamson chose to leave when he did. I will forever be grateful that he shared his music, and that I can remember him that way.)

Finally, for those who don't know the lyrics, here's a version of one of the songs played by the piper at Ypres. It takes on more significance when you know the lyrics.

Yes! My song of the day is This Turbulance Is Beautiful - You Me At Six 1. Justin Bieber, that ********. My friends are obsessed with that singing bloody fetus. Atleast there's alot of people that mock and hate Bush... 2. Dunno? Maybe that completely irrelevant dance Johnny Depp does at the end of Alice... 3. Tina you fat lard! 4. I wish I was Robert Smith's grand daughter. Think of the connections! Best friends... Probably Frank Iero and Gabe Saporta. 5. Yess! Right now I'm crushing hard on Zacky Vengeance from Avenged Sevenfold. Oh gawd. Ian Watkins from the Lostprophets is a constant one too :) 6. Umm... Someday by the Strokes 9. Four years ago... Ohh gross. I had a horrible taste, I think I had my Kayne West fest. and Chris Brown and Cassie. I don't want to think about it! BQ11. What song did you last have in your head?

This one is rather poignant because the video uses actual war film footage.

i just answered a question like this

i dedicated gimme shelter by the rolling stones and war pigs by black sabbath, since again, people who have been involved in war are the only ones who can know how bad it is...additionally, war by edwin starr comes to mind
