The high incidence of medical and biological themes does not surprise us: besides the fact that this study was carried out in the context of ‘Earth and Life Science’ classes, these themes are usually those chosen by cinema, television and newspapers due to the controversy they arouse and the strong visual images they provide.

Some of the stories’ plots reveal remarkable influences: (a) of a Brazilian soap opera (The Clone) shown on Portuguese television, which focuses on cloning; (b) of films recently shown on television or at the cinema; and (c) of a fiction book from a Portuguese collection for youngsters (figure 1). Many of the stories on cloning include scientific, moral and ethical issues, and even certain misconceptions presented by this soap opera and some films. The most common misconceptions included are the possible use of cloning for the ‘resurrection’ of dictators or the ‘production’ of people with identical physical, behavioural and psychological traits. The images of science and scientists presented in science fiction stories are mostly positive ones (28 texts; 68.3%). According to these stories, both science and scientists’ activity have essentially instrumental and humanitarian aims (to save Mankind, find cures for diseases, develop sophisticated equipment, etc.).
