The first official flag of the Confederacy, called the "Stars and Bars," was flown from March 5, 1861 to May 26, 1863.
The second national flag of the Confederacy, called the "Stainless Banner," was put into service on May 1, 1863. It was designed to replace the first national flag. The first national flag had become increasingly criticized for its similarity to the Stars and Stripes, even though this had been the main argument for its initial adoption. The flag is sometimes referred to as the "Stonewall Jackson Flag" because of its inaugural use covering Stonewall Jackson's coffin at his funeral. This is the most known flag.
The third national flag was adopted March 4, 1865, just before the fall of the Confederacy. The red vertical stripe was proposed by Major Arthur L. Rogers, who argued that the pure white field of the second national flag could be mistaken as a flag of truce. Rogers lobbied successfully to have his design introduced in the Confederate Senate. He defended his design as having "as little as possible of the Yankee blue", and described it as symbolizing the primary origins of the people of the South, with the cross of Britain and the red bar from the flag of France

Actually the flag most people think of when you say "confederate flag" is the army or navy (depending on the shape and outline) battle jack..thats the red flag with the cross with stars on it (the big X is a saint andrews cross) ..but there were many many confederate flags, and as for the official flags of the confederacy, such as the national flags, very few people even realise they are confederate flags when they see them.along with the palmetto flag, the bonnie blue flag, and the countless other regional flags..however i expect you are thinking of the confederate navy battle jack (its the most commonly depicted rebel flag)
