Ad-ware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy- Can these harm your computer?

I have a Windows 98 computer (yeah I know I need an upgrade). For a year now my computer has been really slow and everyone was recommending Ad-ware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy. They seem to catch the viruses that harm my computer but performance wise...I don't see any changes. Still my computer is slow as can be. Can anyone recommend what I should do to make my computer faster? Should I download a new program and erase the others? Should I only keep one program? I am clueless! For those who are I don't have the high-speed connection as we live out in the country in the middle of no-where and the high-speed connection doesn't reach this area (go figure!). Anyways, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day! :)

They are both safe to use but you'll find that Ad-Aware SE Personal is now out of date and has been replaced with Ad-Aware 2008 which I personally don't rate.

Spybot Search and Destroy is very good but be sure to update and immunize before you use it. I'd use this once a week.

If you want an alternative you could try SUPERantispyware [free version] but please check that it is compatible with 98. This uses fewer resources that Spybot and picks up the same infections and sometimes actually picks up more so I prefer it.

Ccleaner will clean your "crap" out and there are 2 scans on this. Cleaner and Registry. I'd use both daily and remove/fix everything it finds. Repeat the Registry fix until nothing is detected.

It'd been a long time since I used 98 so please check that this is compatible before using it.

If you can do a disk cleanup and defragment then that too should speed up things and adding more ram would too.

Stopping programs running on start up that you don't need and if you're not using them will help too.

Here's a link to info on speeding up 95 and 98, hope this helps.

Win 98 is an old OS which more than likely means your computer is old.

Ad-ware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy are both antispyware program & cannot remove viruses, only spyware.

Because your PC is old you need to look at how much ram it has & when downloading programs look at how much ram they use.

If you look at superantispyware, yes it will run on win 98 but only if you have 400Mhz or Faster Processor with at least 256MB RAM which most Win 98 OS computers don't have.

You should also note microsoft no longer support win 98.

What i would recommend is running ATF cleaner (tick all the boxes)

    Then do a defrag.

No, those two are quite safe but checkout the system requirements for SuperAntiSpyware. If you can, use this rather than Ad-Aware / AA *and* Spybot. It's more effective. CCleaner is a great little freebie which will clear out a lot of unneeded 'dead' files left on your pc (use the SLIM build - smaller). As it's an old pc you've probably got a fairly small hard drive so defragging might help (very slow process usually).

The performance impact of several security software may counter the performance benefit. Try uninstalling one program. It might help.
