How do you know if a matrix possesses symmetry?

    If the transpose is equal to the original matrix.

    [[ 2 5 ]

    [ 5 3 ]]

    is an example of a symmetric 2x2 matrix.

    Many physics problems that involve finding the equilibrium of a system. These problems use symmetric matrices to express the energy of the system. They are very useful because they occur in nature. I tell you this because one is often thrown many definitions without being told what they're good for.
