and the mean of these three numbers is 14.

    (12+17+x)/3=14

    12+17+x=42

    x=13

    proof:

    12+13+17=42

    42/3=14

    (12+17+x) / 3 = 14

    4 + 17/3 + x/3 =14

    12 + 17 +x = 42

    x= 13

    it is the mean multiplied by the amount of numbers. then subtract the numbers you know

    so 14*3=42-12=30-17=13
