genetic counseling for down syndrome?

since down syndrome is not inherited (error in cell division), there would be no point of genetic counseling before getting pregnant right? genetic counseling for DS would only work after the woman is pregnant?

thanks!

Down syndrome is usually random, like you said, but the chance to have a second pregnancy with Down syndrome is a little bit higher than what it would be for other women the same age who have not had a pregnancy with Down syndrome. Additionally, there are rare forms of Down syndrome (called translocation Down syndrome) that can be inherited. A genetic counselor could talk with you (either before getting pregnant or during a pregnancy) about what the chance would be of having another pregnancy with Down syndrome and what testing options would be available during a pregnancy. So it just depends on whether you would want this information before getting pregnant or whether you'd rather wait until after and then discuss at that point.

Not entirely correct. There is a possibility for translocation which can be inherited. I would suggest that you consult a geneticist affiliated with a reputable university hospital for guidance. Also understand that there are inherent risks (read flaws) with most pre-natal testing. You need to read and speak with your OB/GYN to try to understand these. Yes, except there is a rare kind of Down syndrome that is inherited. It is carried by a parent who does not have Down syndrome but can pass it to his/her child. But that's rare and most people don't even know they have it.

no they cannot pre test for ds before pregnancy after you are pregnant

they can test the amniotic fluid but if you do have a child with ds it is more likely to have a second child with ds it is known that ds does come from the mothers cells.
