Hi, C.W.!
Well... there was a time when I would have said:
"Chat" is an informal, somewhat idle exchange
of pleasantries in a conversation, usually brief in nature.
Webster's says: Chat: v., to converse in a familiar
or informal manner. n., informal conversation.
Yahoo can't define it, but "they know it when they see it",
like the judge who couldn't define pornography, but he
[knew it when he saw it.] Right.
And, like the definition of pornography, the definition
of chat varies from individual to individual.
My current definition of "chat" is:
That thing
- which if removed from the Y!A Community Guidelines as a violation- would instantly relieve most of the tension and quiet most of the unrest on-site.
Because they will not,
(and because NO ONE knows what it will turn out to BE...!)
"chat" is the source of a great deal of unhappiness and
upset, and the reason more members LEAVE Y!A every day.
See? Yeah. Me either. }:>

An informal, ongoing conversation. As in, if I asked a question, you responded, I said something else, and you replied, and so on, and so on. If my boss asked me a question, and I gave him an answer, and that was the end of the conversation, that would NOT be construed as chatting.

Mine would be actually having conversations back and forth and calling out one another with pointed questions.
