    Personally, I use the Maya PLE, but as beginner, try Alice...

    It's not really a modellin program, but you can use it to animate stuff, and create games with existing models...

    or an alternative is Blender:

    Google SketchUp, its a free 3D modeling program used by archaeologist.

    I really like POV-ray. It's really easy to learn if you take an afternoon to go through the tutorial. After just a few hours, you'll be making some very fun and interesting scenes.
