Virginia weather in terms of winter summer and hurricanes?

How is a typical Virginia winter? I want to know in comparison to NY's Hudson Valley, where I live now, where we have chilly fall's hot summers, freezing snowy winters and very chilly rainy springs. We don't get hurricanes or tornados but overall what is the weather like near James Madison University or the beach area?
