Ok now your telling our ages for those of us who either had one or remember a family member having one ;-)
I lived with my aunt and remember this vividly...I have alot of funny and not so funny memories of "The Party Line" Like the lil old ladies gossiping, if you got on the phone at the right/wrong moment you may hear things you did not want to hear! Then if someone picked up and said I have an emergency please clear the line, you cleared the line no matter what. Wow the good ole days. I have a son and I wished many many times I could have brought him up in a much simpler lifestyle we had then. Everyone helped each other, neighbors were true neighbors. If there was a death people made sure the family had whatever they needed, food arrived for weeks not just one day. Then if it left a widow, everyone rallied around and helped her any way they could. Grass mowed, snow shoveled the farm still got worked if they had one.
How sad it is today on how people treat others.....I had a horrific accident 4 years ago and will be disabled for life, do you think any neighbor has offered to help mow my lawn, shovel my driveway? No they have not. I was thrown from a forklift and it ran over me, and I was hired as office worker.....The accident broke my back, crushed left arm, wrist, fingers, crushed left leg...So It is a miracle I am able to even walk! I do not walk normally or without the use of a cane. So you know what? I still wish right now we had "Party Lines"!
