What is years of discord about?

What is the purpose of that book? Not even half way into the book and it's confusing. I know it's about J.F.K's election and goes to Nixons resignation but what is the point of this book? Theme?

    Years of Disocrd is a period of bad time.

    It means from Kennedy to Nixon, a period of badness in USA.
