he promised to take land from the upper classes and redistribute it amongst the peasants and to end Russia's involvement in the 1st world war which had brought Russia to its knees, cost the lives of thousands of people, and led to widespread famine.
HOWEVER, in the the first election of the Russian constituent assembly, he did not win a majority, he was easily defeated by the social revolutionaries who had the support of the rural population.
