John Peter Zenger was a publisher in New York who was charged with sedition for publishing an editorial that the colonial governor didn't like.
The trial was famous for setting a precedent for freedom of the press, largely through the defense mounted by Andrew Hamilton, the original "Philadelphia lawyer."
This case was tried in 1735, some 50+ years before the Bill of Rights was attached to the Constitution; it even predated the establishment of the United States.Source(s): Former history teacher and long time resident of Philadelphia--yes, I rocked in the Cradle of Liberty :-) !
