I FULLY support stem cells. They saved my life. I am a leukemia patient and had a stem cell transplant last year. Stem cell transplant is a fancy term for a bone marrow transplant, but with a slightly broader meaning. Stem cell transplants can use hematopoetic stem cells (blood stem cells) from 3 sources:
Marrow - donated by adults who volunteer to do so
Peripheral blood stem cells - a type of white blood cell in the circulating blood donated by adult volunteers
Cord Blood - the umbilical cord and after birth donated by volunteers only after a live healthy birth when it is no longer a living part of mom or baby.
The transplant can be used to treat leukemias, lymphomas, myleomas and several non cancerous blood diseases. It can be used to treat a lot of auto immune diseases and can be used in conjunction with other organ transplants to give patients a chance to come off the anti rejection meds. AND it may be a future possible cure aids.
Adult stem cells can also be taken from skin and testicles. Every organ of the body contains stem cells and they are making progress every single day.
As far as embryonic stem cells.... I support that as well. Until/unless you ban abortion and treatments like IVF you can NOT tell me that I cannot donate the fetal remains or embryos to research. While I am sure someone somewhere has been paid, by policy and law it is illegal to pay for such donations.
It is important to understand a couple things though. By the time an abortion occurs, there is not much that can be done in the way of stem cells. It is also important to understand what IVF is.
In Vitro Fertalization is a fertility treatment. Women have their eggs harvested, fertalized with sperm to create embryos, and then the embryos are frozen. With each menstrual cycle a few embryos are inserted into the uterus praying that even just one will implant. IVF by nature kills embryos, because it usually takes several cycles to work. When the inserted embryos dont implant, they are passed with the menstrual cycle and die.
After the woman has her desired children, she can do several things with the embryos.
A. Keep storing them, but the fees are outragous and most dont
B. Donate them to other women.. But must dont because most women are doing this so they can have their own biological child, and most women would not want someone else raising their biological child.
C. Release them to the clinic for destruction, which is what most do
D. Donate them to research.
Most people dont have a clue what is involved in IVF or that the embryos are dead with or without the research.
I think it is hypocritical to tell me I can kill all those embryos in vain attempts to get preg after my body has said no, but tell me I cant donate the rest of the embryos for research.
And then, what about hormonal birth control? The pill, depo, norplant, nuva ring, plan b, and IUDS can all contribute to the death of an embryo. Their first measure is to try to prevent you from ovulating. The next is to thicken the cervical mucos so that sperm would not be able to get to the egg. BUT, its third measure of protection (and with some IUDs the Only means of protection) is to thin the endometrial lining so that an embryo would not be able to implant.
I have heard some people say that researching the embryos and fetus would be like researching the Jews that were killed during the holaucost. That is really shock value. If they really thought it was that bad, they would be doing more to fight abortion and IVF and every other type of embryonic research. It is possible with the new research and the current justices that the Supreme Court would have a different say about abortion today.
I think the media puts a bad twist on stem cell research. People hear stem cells and cloning, and the watch movies like the 6th Day or the Matrix and get all wacked out thinking that is what medicine is trying to do. It is NOT.
I also think that people worry that the embryonic stem cell research is going to lead no where.... How does it look to be the person that killed all those embryos and have nothing to show for it. But, people dont understand that those embryos are dead with or without the research.
