I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy a spyware killer for years. I have recently added superantispyware. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.0 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

You need anti-virus as well as adware to be fully protected. You dont need a million programs as was said before AVG is one of the "free" best but certainly not the best by any standard. I had a Windows Xp Security background and it was a virus that disabled my windows taskbar so that i was unable to launch any programs, my desktop items were hidden also.
AVG found the virus but couldnt take any action. Adware was able to delete it tho whereas AVG couldnt.

    So in terms of free
    1st, download AVG http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-F...

    2nd, download Adware http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-F...

When both are installed, run a full system scan starting with AVG then use Adware afterwards to detect any viruses that may have been hidden.

McAfee Site Advisor is a recommended tool for virus protection also, warns you against sites with potential viruses. Just added safety for your computer.

    Avira AntiVir
    Avast
    AVG

    in that order
I use avast, because i'm too lazy to switch and I like the idle scan
but it really doesn't matter, they all use the same databases

    all at www.download.com

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-... [Free home edition]

Avira is also a good anti-virus
    http://www.free-av.com

Windows Defender is recommended in addition for FREE real-time spy-ware protection.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/product...

Download SuperAntiSpyware for user initiated scans
