I have a Gateway FPD 1730 17-inch LCD Monitor, and bought a HP d5000t desktop and wanted to know if will work?

Will my old Gateway monitor be compatible with my new HP desktop or do i have to buy an adapter to get it to work?

yes the monitor is compatible through the VGA interface.
