Can I use an old 250gig hd 98windows for my new vista os?

Yes.
If you're planning on installing Vista on that drive, then you'll be required to reformat it. But if you're going to use that drive as a second drive in your computer, then you do not need to format it.

There shouldn't be a problem. I just recommend you format the drive.
