Can heating food in a tin can be bad for you?

Sometimes I don't like to bother wasting dishes and tend to put a tin can directly on the stove. My roommate told me it might be bad for me. I tried searching the internet for some info but found nothing besides that melting point for tin is about 260C/500F.
